The Mays Group: Summer 2012

Michaela Bunde

Hometown: Hartford, SD
Major(s): Chemistry (Mount Marty College, Yankton, SD)

Michaela grew up in Hartford, SD and currently lives in Sioux Falls. Michaela is a student at Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. She will be a junior this fall, majoring in Chemistry and is a member of Moutn Marty's softball team. After graduation, Michaela plans to attend Pharmacy school. In her spare time, she likes to draw, play video games, and go fishing. Michaela is working in the Mays Lab this summer as a 2012 BRIN Fellow. Her summer research involves the synthesis and evaluation of isothiocyanates.

Amanda Johnson

Hometown: Sioux Falls, SD
Major(s): ACS Biochemistry

Graduating from Roosevelt High School (Rough Riiiiders!) from the ‘west’ side of Sioux Falls in 2010, Amanda entered Augustana College with a nursing major in mind. But stumbling upon her natural talent and love for chemistry, she decided to change her major to ACS Biochemistry early her freshman year. Determined to go into the medical field, Amanda aims to be an orthopedic or general surgeon. Being a family doctor, pediatrician, and researcher also intrigues her, so really nothing is decided. Amanda enjoys traveling to different countries, the outdoors, volleyball, running (currently training for her second half-marathon), watching movies, and getting into different shenanigans with friends. She also loves being as busy as a bee with volleyball reffing, ASA, UBG, SKOL, CIVITAS, Viking days committee, SMACS, NSO, Augustana's Premed club, and now TriBeta. Amanda's research project involves the synthesis and evaluation of alkyl isothiocyanates.

Ruthellen "Elle" Tornberg

Hometown: Harrisburg, SD
Major(s): ACS Biochemistry

Elle is very well "cultured", having grown up in Harrisburg, SD and is moving into her junior year at Augustana College as a Biochemistry major. She is also involved in piano performance, the Augie Outdoor Club, and is co-president of the SMACS club. During her spare time, Elle enjoys running, playing the blues on the guitar, rock climbing, horseback riding, and diving into a good novel. Upon graduation, Elle is considering attending medical school or pursuing a graduate degree in medicinal chemistry. During the summer of 2012, Elle's research involved the synthesis and evaluation of novel isothiocyanates as well as method development for an electrophilicity assay.

Taylor Yseth

Hometown: Harrisburg, SD
Major(s): Chemistry and Philosophy

Taylor just recently completed her first year at Augustana College, majoring in chemistry and philosophy. Outside of the laboratory, Taylor plans to overcome a lifetime of un-athelticism by running her first 5k race. In her spare time, Taylor enjoys spending time with her dog Oliver, taking naps, and cleaning. Taylor's research for the summer involved the synthesis of isothiocyanates and the development of a variety of analytical assays.
