Mike Amolins

Michael Amolins

Hometown: Sioux Falls, SD
Degrees: 2007, B.A. (ACS Chemistry) Augustana College; 2009, M.S., Medicinal Chemistry, The University of Kansas

Michael is currently working as a research associate in the Mays laboratory. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 2003, Michael attended Augustana College, where he completed a B.A. in Chemistry in 2007. In August of 2007, he entered the graduate program in Medicinal Chemistry at The University of Kansas where he worked full time in a cancer research laboratory to designe, synthesize, and biologically evaluate cancer chemotherapeutics. After graduating in 2009, Michael entered the work force as a chemistry and physics teacher at Harrisburg High School in Harrisburg, SD – a position he currently holds. In addition to his interest in science, Mike is an avid saxophone player, and is currently a member of the Dakota Wind Ensemble and the South Dakota Jazz Orchestra. He also loves spending time with his family and friends.

Jordan Clark

Jordan Clark

Hometown: Owatonna, MN
Major(s): Chemistry, Music Performance

Although Jordan was born in Kansas City, MO, he considers himself more of a Minnesota boy. Growing up, he developed interests in a wide variety of hobbies including biking, bowling, fishing, carpentry, music, graphic design, and competitive gaming. Jordan is an avid musician and plays the cello and guitar. Between his long-standing interests in medicine and chemistry, Jordan is ambitious to pursue chemical medicine. In 2007, Jordan came to Augustana and will be a senior this fall. In his third summer of undergraduate research, Jordan spent the summer of 2010 working toward the synthesis of D,L-sulforaphane and the development of non-natural heterocyclic glucosinolates. Upon completion of his degree this coming year, Jordan intends to pursue a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.

Cody Lensing

Cody Lensing

Hometown: Moundsview, MN
Major(s): Biochemistry, Philosophy

This fall, Cody will be a junior at Augustana College majoring in biochemistry and philosophy. He is an active member of the wrestling team at Augustana, enjoys running and has completed a marathon and a half ironman. During his spare time, Cody enjoys camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking, cross country skiing, or sipping on coffee while reading a book. Upon graduation, Cody is considering going to medical school or pursuing a graduate degree in biochemistry. During the summer of 2010, Cody worked on the synthesis and evaluation of novel isothiocyanates.

Kayla Vastenhout

Kayla Vastenhout

Hometown: Dell Rapids, SD
Major(s): Chemistry

This fall, Kayla will be a junior at Augustana College, majoring in chemistry. In her spare time, she is a laboratory and chemical stockroom assistant, and hopes to one-day pursue a career in chemistry. During the summer of 2010, Kayla's research project involved the synthesis and RP-HPLC monitored hydrolysis of non-natural glucosinolates.
