Biography:

After growing up in rural South Central Minnesota, I matriculated to Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, MN) to complete my undergraduate education. While a student at Gustavus, I was active in a variety of music ensembles, the Men's Varsity Track & Field Team, and the Departments of Chemistry and Biology as a teaching assistant and tutor. My love for chemistry research was established through two summers spent working on the construction of chiral phenolic ligands with Dr. Gretchen Hofmeister. In 2003, I graduated with a double major in chemistry and biochemistry and began work toward a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI). My doctoral thesis described my efforts toward the development of prodrug histone deacetylase inhibitors under the direction of Dr. Scott R. Rajski and was successfully defended in 2007. From 2007-2009, I conducted postdoctoral research on C-terminal Hsp90 inhibitors with Dr. Brian S. J. Blagg in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at The University of Kansas. I joined the faculty at Augustana College in the fall of 2009 and have since instructed courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and senior capstone. My research at Augustana focuses on the medicinal chemistry of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, anti-cancer natural products found in broccoli.

My wife, Jenny, and I were married in 2008 and have three wonderful children, Elliot, Aurelia and Rosalind. All of our kids are energetic and inquisitive and are more than enough to keep us on our toes as parents!
