Chemistry 330: Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry (Fall 2013)

Course Description: This is a one-semester course on biochemistry and medicinal chemistry, taught from a chemical perspective. The first part of this course covers the chemistry of many biologically macromolecules (e.g. carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins, and enzymes plus nucleic acids) and the metabolic cycles. The remainder of the course is devoted to the major classes of therapeutic drugs with an emphasis on categorizing physiological effects with functional groups and binding site stereochemistry. Laboratory emphasizes synthesis and analysis of the classical biochemical compound types and pharmaceutical-type preparations.

Course Objectives:
1. Display knowledge of the chemistry of cellular macromolecules and enzymes
2. Understand the chemistry and biochemistry of metabolic pathways
3. Describe and apply the principles of medicinal chemistry
4. Differentiate the basic classes of pharmaceuticals
5. Identify structure-function relationships for each drug class
6. Perform multi-step chemical synthesis of rationally-designed small molecules
7. Effectively demonstrate scientific writing (lab documentation, manuscripts, review articles)
