Chemistry 202: Organic Chemistry II (Fall 2010)

Course Description: This course is the second of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry that will cover functional groups ranging from ethers to biological macromolecules. Within each functional group, we will explore topics in nomenclature, physical and chemical properties, reactions, reaction mechanisms, and spectroscopic analysis.

Course Objectives:
1. Name aromatics, aldehydes, ketones, acids, acid derivatives, amines, and amine derivatives
2. Predict UV absorption bands for unsaturated compounds
3. Strengthen their knowledge of Lewis and Br√łnsted-Lowry Acids/Bases
4. Identify reactions and synthetic preparation of families named in objective #1
5. Understand and apply the theory of MS, IR, and NMR techniques to identify unknown compounds
6. Identify the major classes of biological macromolecules and their relevant chemistry
7. Understand essential eukaryotic metabolic pathways from a chemical perspective
