Instructions for Research Participation
Psyc 125 D, Lifespan Human Development
Students are required to participate in one psychological research session
taking place at Augustana College. These sessions will last up to one hour,
and will consist of one or more separate psychology studies.
Sign up for a research session posted on the door of MC 126. If no sessions
are posted, return on a later day. Then attend the session and follow the researcher's
instructions. At the end of the study, you will receive a debriefing, or explanation
the purpose and basic methods of the studies. After the debriefing, have the
experimenter sign the attached Research Report Form. This form can also be printed
from the Psychology Department's website at http://www.augie.edu/dept/psych/reportform.pdf.
Besides having the researcher sign the form, you must fill out the questions
on the form about the hypothesis being tested and the variables that were measured
in one of the studies. Return the form to the instructor on the next day of
class.
If you elect not to participate in a psychology study, you may instead write up a brief outline from one of the chapters in the book, How to think straight about psychology (Seventh edition), by Keith Stanovich. This book is on closed (i.e. 2-hour) reserve at Mikkelsen Library. Read one chapter out of chapters four through eight in that book, then make up an outline of that chapter. Your outline should be organized around the major sections in the chapter, as well as important points within those sections. Illustrative examples do not have to be included in the outline. Please inform the instructor ahead of time if you wish to take this option.
