Piano Proficiency Information

DESCRIPTION

All students seeking a music degree from Augustana College must successfully complete the Augustana Music Department piano proficiency requirement.  This requirement includes skills in sight-reading, improvisation, harmonization, technique, keyboard theory (scales, chords and progressions), transposition, repertoire, and accompanying. 

 

PROCEDURE

All music majors at Augustana College must be enrolled in piano study for credit until the piano proficiency requirement has been completed.  Completion of the requirement can be accomplished by:

 

  1. Examination
  2. Completing the piano proficiency curriculum for the respective area (e.g. instrumental or vocal) with the instructor
  3. Completing four terms of piano study at Augustana college with a grade in each term of B- or higher.

 

Normally, students take four terms of piano for credit designed to complete the piano proficiency curriculum, including two terms of piano classes (MUSI 152, MUSI 153) followed by two terms of applied piano (MUSI 165)
