This course is a survey of
piano compositions by major composers to include J. S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart,
Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Ravel, and Debussy. Lectures and class discussions outline each
composer's works for the piano, as well as concentrate on one major significant
work by each composer for analysis of style and performance practice.
Classes are mostly
lecture-oriented, with frequent listening activities and analyses of major
significant works. Students are expected
to have completed the assigned readings for each class meeting. Also, students should spend consistent time
out of class (daily) listening to listening assignments for each composer. Listening quizzes are taken from these
listening lists, and written quizzes cover assigned readings and class lectures.
