COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

MUSI 152 – Beginning Class Piano

This course is the first semester of instruction for music majors (non-pianists) preparing for the departmental piano proficiency requirements.  Keyboard reading and technique are developed and theoretical principles of harmony and scalar materials are applied to the keyboard.  Ensemble and solo literature is presented along with improvisational activities.  Prerequisite:  Music major or permission of instructor.

MUSI 153   Intermediate Class Piano

This course provides the second semester of instruction for music majors (non-pianists) preparing for the departmental piano proficiency requirements.  Keyboard reading and technique are further developed and harmonization is realized throughout major and minor tonalities.  Scalar and arpeggio techniques are covered as well as preparation for further requirements in the vocal/choral or instrumental areas.  Ensemble and solo literature are further explored.  Prerequisite:  MUSI 152 or permission of instructor.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND ACTIVITIES

These courses meet for two 50-minute sessions weekly.  The first session is lecture oriented with the instructor explaining and demonstrating assigned materials and activities.  The second session is a laboratory session in which the students engage in practice of the assigned materials and activities.  In alternate weeks, quizzes are given to assess progress toward the assigned objectives.
